Several thoughts we share with the 'authorities'
On hiring a fishing guide:
"Tipping a guide is entirely up to the client. It is never expected, but always appreciated"
"Tipping should reflect the quality of the work and respect given by the guide & staff, not the number and/or size of fish caught"
"When tipping a staff member or a guide, it is very important to do it directly to the individual, not in a roll of bills delivered to one person. This is sincere and demonstrates your appreciation in a way that is obvious to all the individuals involved"
"If in a foreign country, a guest should ask in advance if tipping should be in native currency or US dollars. Typically, people prefer a tip in their native currency"
"It is a considerate gesture to offer a gift to an individual, but it should be done above and beyond a monitary gratuity. I have observed guests who have decided to leave a rain coat or 'multi-tool' to a staff member, in lieu of a monetary gratuity. Although this is considerate, it is considered superficial to their real and immediate needs as employees of a lodge/restaraunt".
"Nothing demonstrates appreciation like a sincere hand shake with eye contact. Offer a monetary gratuity, and you have sent the most genuine 'thank-you' in the business." If you plan on it in advance, the moment will not be awkward or considered an 'after-thought'!
We hope these impressions help to demystify the tipping expectations from both sides of the relationship!
